The Coast that Shaped the World (COAST)

The Coast That Shaped the World (2020 - 2023) was a major community-led heritage project, gathering stories from across Scotland’s west coast, reflecting the culture and lived experience of coastal communities from Wester Ross and Lewis to Arran and Kintyre.

Managed by the Centre for Recreation and Tourism Research at UHI West Highland and delivered with ruralDimensions, Lateral North and 32 local Story Gatherers, the project created high-quality digital and exhibition outputs to support sustainable tourism and celebrate local knowledge.

Part of the £5 million Natural and Cultural Heritage Fund led by NatureScot and supported by ERDF, CalMac and UHI North, West and Hebrides, COAST invested in the protection and sharing of natural and cultural heritage across remote rural areas.

As Project Officer, I supported story gathering, interpretation and delivery across web, app and exhibition formats, ensuring community voices were presented respectfully, accurately and accessibly.

This short film, created by consultants Lateral North, captures what made the COAST project so poignant, and why stories matter.
