The ‘Wise Women’ of Lochaber - Geotourist Trail
A journey through folklore, myth, and inspiration. Wise woman, spey wife, bana-bhuidsichean, healer… witch. Intuitive women have been labelled many things over the centuries, and I created a new trail in 2024 as part of my work as a Project Officer at UHI’s Centre for Recreation and Tourism Research (CRTR).
The aim was to share stories and sites connected to two of these women who have been represented in folklore and myth, and who continue to creatively inspire women today. These ‘wise women’ of Lochaber that feature in the trail are Gormshùil Mhòr na Maighe (The Great Gormula of Moy), and Corrag of Glencoe. There are 14 stops, including Glencoe Folk Museum, West Highland Museum, Clan Cameron Museum, and Glencoe National Nature Reserve NTS.
Producing this trail was made possible thanks to funding from the Jane Bruce Milne Anderson Dream Fund. The trail was also hugely enhanced with volunteer contribution from Kayleigh Carr, a 4th year School of Adventure Studies UHI student.
